The Uncle Graham - 12 seater dining table
The Uncle Graham wooden dining table is the follow up to the "Doll's Leg" Table which was inspired by antique porcelain dolls’ legs and very simply painted.
This table is 3000 mm (L) x 1140 mm (W) x 750 mm (H). I have used the golden ratio of 1.618 as much as possible throughout the construction of the table. There are no metal parts or fixings. It features a shellac finish, then finally French polished by hand.
The Sapele Mahogany which I chose for this table, is known for it beautiful golden reddish brown but is a challenge to work with due to its interlocking grain. I wanted to challenge myself with the carving and finishing of the legs. The table features a male end and a female end. The female legs are very subtly smooth to the touch.
During the creative design process my very charismatic Uncle Graham died. He was an absolute legend to all who knew him. He could be spotted ambling around the irrigation channels in his gumboots, or barefeet. Occasionally he would come face to face with a deadly snake. So, In his memory I named the table after him and one of the male legs features his worn gumboot.
I made this table while living in South Africa. Hanging under the table is an antique book with the story of the table and the wonderful African gentlemen who helped me create it.
The loved table is still used as our dining room table at home. It has played a major part in many family dinners and dinner parties. It has been privy to long (often exaggerated) tales, laughter and delicious food and drinks.
One day I would love to hand it down to the next generation.
This piece was commissioned by the Kennedy family of whom I had a long working relationship with. They asked for an Italian inspired desk.
Almost every item – hinges, leather, stitching and metal work - was custom designed and manufactured specifically for this table. After several prototypes, this desk’s end result was magnificent and the clients were thrilled with the outcome.
